Inside the Workshop

First find the fault. Then decide what it needs.

Two clocks with the same symptom do not necessarily have the same problem. One may be dirty, another worn, and another may have a damaged spring or a poor earlier repair. That is why a useful assessment begins with the clock itself.

If a full service is required, the movement is removed from its case and dismantled. The parts are cleaned and checked, repairs are made where needed, and the movement is rebuilt, oiled correctly and regulated. It then spends time running in the workshop before it is returned.

The shop is at 4 Bath Road in Stonehouse, only a few miles from Stroud. Smaller clocks can be dropped off during opening hours. Longcase clocks and other difficult pieces can be collected and set up again at home by arrangement.

Worth Getting Checked

Problems that should not be ignored

  • The clock will only run for a few minutes or hours
  • Timekeeping has become steadily worse
  • The hands and striking are no longer in step
  • The movement looks dirty, sticky or over-oiled
  • A winding key turns without feeling right
  • The case, dial or finish has suffered damage
Before trying a home fix: WD-40 and general-purpose oils do not belong in a clock movement. They spread, collect dust and leave more work to undo later.
What Comes Through the Door

Antique and modern mechanical clocks

Some arrive as family heirlooms; others were bought simply because their owners liked them. Value is not the only reason a clock deserves to be repaired well.

01

Longcase Clocks

Repair and servicing for grandfather, grandmother and other floor-standing clocks, with collection available.

02

Mantel Clocks

From straightforward timepieces to French and English striking clocks with more involved movements.

03

Bracket Clocks

Careful work on antique bracket clocks, including movement, dial and case where the job calls for it.

04

Carriage Clocks

Assessment, cleaning and repair for compact carriage-clock mechanisms and their escapements.

05

Wall Clocks & Regulators

Traditional wall clocks, Vienna regulators and other mechanical weight- or spring-driven clocks.

06

Cuckoo & Atmos Clocks

Work considered according to the movement, its condition and whether suitable parts remain available.

Quartz, mains-powered and flip-card clocks are not normally taken on.

Testing & Return

It is tested before collection. Delivery and in-home set-up can also be arranged.

Knowing When to Stop

Restoration should not erase its age

There is a difference between damage and honest age. A faded dial, worn finish or old repair needs judgement before it needs action. Making an antique look brand new can remove the very character that makes it worth keeping.

Where restoration is appropriate, the workshop can deal with cases and dials as well as movements. The available work includes silvering, gilding and hand engraving, using methods suited to the clock rather than a one-treatment-fits-all approach.

James has worked professionally with clocks since 2003 and completed a British Horological Institute diploma in clock servicing and restoration.

In Their Words

What our customers say

James serviced and cleaned our French 8 day mantel clock, which hadn't worked for many years. It's been in our family for over 100 years, and he did an excellent job. It's now back in its rightful place on the mantle. Stunning!

Erica Read, Google Review

Super experience. I got a clock service and a pocket watch repair, both reasonably priced, and got some great advice at the same time. Highly recommend if you have any antique clocks or watches that need attention.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How close is the workshop to Stroud?

Vintage Clocks is at 4 Bath Road in Stonehouse, a few miles west of Stroud. Smaller clocks can be brought in during shop hours; it is sensible to call first if you are making a special journey.

Can you collect a grandfather clock from the Stroud area?

Yes, collection and return can be arranged for longcase and other floor-standing clocks. Set-up at home is also available. The charge depends on the journey and the clock involved.

My clock works, but the dial or case is damaged. Can you help?

Possibly. Case and dial work is available, including silvering, gilding and hand engraving. Minor cosmetic work is generally undertaken as part of a wider service or overhaul rather than as an isolated job.

Can you quote from a photograph?

Photographs help us identify the clock and decide the next step, but they cannot show all the wear inside a movement. A dependable price and timescale follow inspection. If dismantling reveals unexpected work, we contact you before adding it.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes. Workshop repairs carry a guarantee. The current terms and any exceptions can be explained when your clock is assessed.

Will you repair a battery or mains-powered clock?

Not normally. Vintage Clocks concentrates on antique and good-quality modern mechanical clocks rather than quartz, mains-powered or flip-card models.
