Full Description:
An exceptional and highly unusual c.1870 French Mantel Clock designed beautifully in the architectural style of a grand carriage clock. This is a remarkably substantial, large-stature piece commanding real presence, measuring 28cm tall with its heavy brass swing handle extended.

Case & Aesthetic:
The heavy, solid brass case boasts a striking architectural silhouette with crisp moldings, decorative fluting along the upper and lower cornices, and a sturdy, classical-style turned handle. Unlike typical carriage clocks with thin frames and five glass panels, this rare mantel variant sports wide, robust brass side flanks and a beautifully integrated round white enamel dial. The dial face features crisp black Roman numerals, sweeping spade hands, and dual winding arbors accessible directly from the front.

Movement & Mechanics:
The reverse features an ornate, pierced sound-fret door that opens to reveal a high-quality French 8-day mechanical movement. It features a fascinating and very rare platform escapement configuration visible at the top of the gear train. The mechanism strikes the hours and half-hours beautifully on a deep, resonant coiled steel blued gong.

Condition & Provenance:
The clock comes paired with its ultra-rare original fitted leather travelling/carry case, which has preserved the timepiece wonderfully for over 150 years. The brass retains a gorgeous, authentic antique patina with minor surface age-toning. The white enamel dial is in clean shape without severe cracks. The rear door opens smoothly, and the mechanics appear highly complete.
