Clock Repair & Restoration in Gloucester
When an old clock stops, loses time or no longer strikes as it should, we find out why. Repairs and servicing are carried out in our own workshop, with the work and cost discussed before we go ahead.

More than a quick oil and adjustment
A clock can appear to have one simple fault while the real cause sits deeper in the movement. Dried oil, worn pivot holes and damaged parts all create friction. Turning an adjuster or adding more oil may get it moving briefly, but it does not deal with that wear.
Where a full service is needed, the movement is taken apart and its components cleaned. We inspect for damage, make the agreed repairs, rebuild the movement and regulate it. It is tested before being fitted back into the case.
Gloucester customers can bring smaller clocks to our shop at 4 Bath Road, Stonehouse, during opening hours or by appointment at other times. If the clock is large, fragile or awkward to move, ask us about collection and return, with set-up at home where needed.
When should a clock be looked at?
- It runs for a while, then stops
- It has become noticeably fast or slow
- The strike or chime is out of sequence
- The movement is dirty or has been heavily oiled
- A spring, hand, pendulum or other part is damaged
- The dial or case needs careful restoration
One useful warning: do not spray WD-40, silicone lubricant or household oil into the clock. It attracts dirt and can turn a straightforward service into a more involved clean-up.

Mechanical clocks welcome
The workshop handles a broad range of antique clocks, along with well-made modern mechanical clocks. If you are unsure what you have, a few clear photographs are usually a good place to start.
Grandfather & Longcase Clocks
Movement servicing, repair and regulation, with collection available for clocks that should remain upright.
Mantel & Bracket Clocks
Work on timepieces ranging from simpler spring-driven clocks to more involved striking and chiming movements.
Carriage Clocks
Cleaning, fault finding and repair for these compact but finely made mechanisms.
Wall Clocks & Regulators
Servicing for traditional wall clocks, Vienna regulators and other weight- or spring-driven movements.
Cuckoo Clocks
Attention to the movement and mechanical functions, subject to the clock’s condition and parts availability.
Atmos Clocks
Specialist assessment and servicing for Atmos clocks.
The workshop is for mechanical clocks. Quartz, electric and flip-card models are not normally accepted.
Start with the Clock
Bring it to Stonehouse or arrange collection. We examine its condition rather than guessing from the symptom.
Confirm the Job
You are told what is recommended, what it will cost and the likely timescale before the repair goes ahead.
Workshop Time
The agreed work is completed, then the clock is regulated and left running long enough to check its performance.
Home Again
Collect from the shop, or have the clock returned and set up for an agreed charge.

Old clocks should still look like old clocks
A case polished until it looks new or a dial repainted without thought can lose the character people valued in the first place. Good restoration is not simply about making everything bright again.
We can deal with the movement, case and dial as one project. That may include silvering, gilding, hand engraving or cabinet work, but only where it suits the clock and the result you have agreed.
James has worked with clocks professionally since 2003. His training includes a diploma in clock servicing and restoration through the British Horological Institute.

What our customers say
James serviced and cleaned our French 8 day mantel clock, which hadn’t worked for many years. It’s been in our family for over 100 years, and he did an excellent job. It’s now back in its rightful place on the mantle. Stunning!

Super experience. I got a clock service and a pocket watch repair, both reasonably priced, and got some great advice at the same time. Highly recommend if you have any antique clocks or watches that need attention.

Clock repair for Gloucester and nearby villages
We regularly welcome enquiries from Gloucester city centre, Quedgeley, Kingsway, Hempsted, Longlevens, Hucclecote, Churchdown, Brockworth and Hardwicke. The Stonehouse shop is reached easily from Gloucester, while collection is available when moving the clock yourself is not sensible.
You do not need to diagnose the fault first. Tell us what the clock is doing, when it last ran properly and anything you know about earlier repairs. Photographs are helpful too.
Frequently asked questions
Ask about your clock
Tell us a little about the clock and the problem. You can bring it from Gloucester to Stonehouse, or ask whether collection would be more suitable.
