When adjusting the clock is no longer enough

If a clock has gradually become less reliable, there may be more to it than the pendulum adjustment. Wear creates friction, old oil holds dirt and a damaged component can interrupt the movement. We examine those possibilities before deciding what should be repaired.

A full service means taking the movement apart. Components are cleaned, pivots and bearings checked and the agreed repairs made before rebuilding. Lubrication, running and regulation are part of the job, rather than an afterthought once the hands begin moving.

Smaller clocks can be brought from Tewkesbury to our shop at 4 Bath Road, Stonehouse. For a longcase clock, or a piece you are unsure how to handle, contact us first. Collection, return and setting up can be discussed before the clock is moved.

What is the clock doing differently?

  • Running for shorter periods between stops
  • Gaining or losing time despite adjustment
  • Striking too many or too few times
  • A chime that slows, falters or stops
  • Winding that feels loose, stiff or irregular
  • Visible damage to the hands, dial or wooden case

Keep a note of the symptoms: when it stops, whether it still strikes and when it was last serviced. That is more useful than repeated winding or trying different oils. If the key meets resistance, do not force it.

Traditional mechanical movements

We work on antique clocks and well-made modern mechanical models. If you are unsure about yours, send a photograph of the case and dial. We can usually establish whether it falls within the workshop’s scope without asking you to dismantle anything.

Grandfather & Longcase Clocks

Servicing and repairs for weight-driven movements, with transport and correct set-up considered alongside the mechanical work.

Mantel & Bracket Clocks

Fault finding in time-only, striking and chiming movements, including worn winding and spring components.

Carriage Clocks

Cleaning, inspection and repair of compact mechanisms where even small amounts of wear can affect running.

Wall Clocks & Regulators

Workshop attention for mechanical dial clocks, Vienna regulators and other traditional wall-mounted clocks.

Cuckoo Clocks

Mechanical servicing and advice on faults, with repair options determined by condition and parts availability.

Atmos Clocks

Assessment and specialist servicing of Atmos clocks through our Stonehouse workshop.

Quartz, electric, flip-card and anniversary/torsion clocks are outside our normal repair work.

A working movement and a sound case

Mechanical wear is only one part of a clock’s condition. Loose joints, damaged veneer or a worn dial may also need attention. We assess that work separately so you know what is necessary for the clock to function and what would improve its appearance.

Traditional restoration work includes cabinet repairs, silvering, gilding and hand engraving. Before treatment, we discuss the existing finish and how much original material can be retained. Age alone is not a reason to strip a case or renew a dial.

James has repaired clocks professionally since 2003. He holds a British Horological Institute diploma in clock servicing and restoration and works from the Stonehouse premises.

What our customers say

James serviced and cleaned our French 8 day mantel clock, which hadn’t worked for many years. It’s been in our family for over 100 years, and he did an excellent job. It’s now back in its rightful place on the mantle. Stunning!

Super experience. I got a clock service and a pocket watch repair, both reasonably priced, and got some great advice at the same time. Highly recommend if you have any antique clocks or watches that need attention.

Tewkesbury clock repair questions

All workshop repairs are carried out at 4 Bath Road, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. We do not have a separate Tewkesbury shop. You can deliver a smaller clock during the published shop hours or discuss collection.

Yes, enquiries are welcome from the surrounding villages as well as the town. Give us your postcode and details of the clock so we can discuss availability, the charge and arrangements for its return.

Not necessarily. The hands and striking sequence may need correcting, but a fault inside the mechanism can cause similar symptoms. Tell us what it strikes and what the dial shows; assessment will establish the appropriate repair.

We undertake mainspring work as part of mechanical clock repairs. The movement needs checking for any related damage and to establish the correct spring. Avoid further winding if the key suddenly turns freely or you have heard a spring break.

Yes. Case and dial restoration are not automatically included in a service. We agree the scope with you, and original surfaces can be left alone where they do not require repair.

The movement is run and regulated at the workshop before return. You can collect the clock or use the delivery arrangements agreed at booking. For a longcase clock, discuss setting up in its final position as part of the job.
