Very Early Carriage Clock, Large Model with Enamelled dial, French 8-Day Striking Movement by Joules A Paris

A stopped clock is not always beyond repair

An old clock may have been put away after it became unreliable, or inherited with little information about its last service. Neither tells us how much work it needs. We inspect the movement, identify wear and check the parts before recommending a repair.

For a movement that needs an overhaul, cleaning is only part of the job. Worn pivot holes, damaged teeth and tired springs need attention too. After dismantling and cleaning, the agreed repairs are completed and the clock is reassembled, lubricated and tested.

Portable clocks can be brought from Cirencester to 4 Bath Road, Stonehouse. For a larger or fragile piece, speak to us before moving it. Collection and return can be arranged, with the details and charges agreed beforehand.

Changes worth investigating

  • The clock stops even after careful winding
  • It gains or loses more time than it used to
  • It strikes a different hour from the one shown
  • The chime misses notes or fails to finish
  • Winding feels unusually stiff or offers no resistance
  • There is damage to the dial, hands or case

If the winding key will not turn: do not force it. A fully wound clock that has stopped needs investigation; more force will not cure the fault. Keep household oils and spray lubricants out of the movement.

From carriage clocks to longcase movements

We work on antique clocks and good-quality modern mechanical models. You do not need to know the maker or technical name of the movement to enquire. Photographs and a description of its behaviour are enough to start.

Grandfather & Longcase Clocks

Servicing weight-driven movements, repairing worn components and regulating the clock. Transport and setting up are discussed as part of the job.

Mantel & Bracket Clocks

Assessment of spring-driven movements, including problems with winding, timekeeping, striking and chimes.

Carriage Clocks

Cleaning and repairs to compact movements and escapements, with close attention to wear in the smaller components.

Wall Clocks & Regulators

Workshop servicing of traditional dial clocks and regulators, followed by checks on running and timekeeping.

Cuckoo Clocks

Advice on mechanical faults and the repairs required, subject to inspection and the availability of suitable parts.

Atmos Clocks

Specialist servicing for Atmos clocks, with the scope of work established after assessment.

Quartz, electric, flip-card and anniversary/torsion clocks are not normally accepted.

Contact the Workshop

Tell us what you have, what has changed and where you are based. Include photographs if possible.

Assess the Condition

We examine the clock and explain the recommended work, likely cost and expected timescale.

Complete the Repairs

Work begins with your approval. The finished movement is run and checked before the clock leaves.

Arrange its Return

Collect from Stonehouse or arrange delivery and any setting up that has been agreed.

Antique clock restoration at Vintage Clocks

Deciding how far restoration should go

Mechanical repair and cosmetic restoration are different decisions. A clock may need its movement serviced while its case requires very little attention. We discuss both separately, so you can decide what should be repaired and what should be left alone.

Where restoration is appropriate, the workshop can undertake case and dial work alongside the movement. Traditional processes include silvering, gilding and hand engraving. The original materials and surviving finish guide the treatment.

James began working professionally with clocks in 2003. He holds a diploma in clock servicing and restoration through the British Horological Institute and carries out the work at Stonehouse.

What our customers say

James serviced and cleaned our French 8 day mantel clock, which hadn’t worked for many years. It’s been in our family for over 100 years, and he did an excellent job. It’s now back in its rightful place on the mantle. Stunning!

Super experience. I got a clock service and a pocket watch repair, both reasonably priced, and got some great advice at the same time. Highly recommend if you have any antique clocks or watches that need attention.

Clock repairs for the Cirencester area

Enquiries are welcome from Cirencester, Stratton, Chesterton, Siddington, South Cerney, Ampney Crucis and Kemble. All workshop repairs are carried out in Stonehouse, with collection available by arrangement.

Before making a trip: call to confirm the shop hours and discuss the clock. For a larger piece, we can talk through whether collection would be more suitable.

Collection and drop-off: we can collect your clock from your home and drop it back once the work is finished. Collections and drop-offs run on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9am to 4pm, for a small fee.

We also repair clocks for customers in Gloucester, Cheltenham and Stroud. See our full range of clock repair and restoration services.

Before you book your clock in

Our shop and workshop are at 4 Bath Road, Stonehouse, rather than in Cirencester itself. You can bring a clock during the stated shop hours or ask about collection from your address.

Collection and return can be arranged for longcase clocks and other large pieces. Give us your postcode and explain any access difficulties, so transport, charges and setting up on return can be discussed before booking.

Yes. Time in storage does not necessarily make a clock unrepairable. Old lubricant, corrosion and existing wear need to be checked. Avoid repeatedly winding it or adding oil in an attempt to start it.

Not necessarily. Servicing deals with the mechanism; restoration addresses the case, dial or other damaged features. We will explain what each part of the work involves so you can agree the extent of treatment.

Pictures help us identify the clock and decide whether it falls within our work. A firm quotation normally requires inspection: wear and earlier repairs may not show in a photograph. The price is agreed before authorised work starts.

A photograph of the whole clock, one of the dial and a brief description of the fault are useful. Add any service history you know. Photograph the movement only if it is safely visible; there is no need to remove it.
