Outstanding French Empire Mantel Clock, Solid Bronze Ormolu Mantle Clock C1830

Knowing what needs attention

A clock does not have to be completely silent to need a service. It may still tick but lose time, struggle to strike or stop between windings. We look for the reason behind those symptoms, including worn bearings, damaged components and old lubricant.

Where a full service is called for, the movement is dismantled so its parts can be cleaned and examined. Repairs are made to the agreed scope, then the mechanism is rebuilt and lubricated. Running and regulation follow before the clock is ready to leave the workshop.

Customers from Hereford can deliver smaller clocks to our shop at 4 Bath Road, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. For longcase clocks and other difficult pieces, ask about collection first. We will discuss the journey, access and charges before arrangements are made.

Timekeeping, winding and striking problems

  • A pendulum that stops shortly after starting
  • Timekeeping that varies from day to day
  • Missing strikes or an incorrect hour count
  • A winding spring that slips or will not hold
  • Damage following a move or an earlier repair
  • A loose hand or damage to the case and dial

If it suddenly stops: avoid repeated attempts to wind or force the mechanism. Tell us what happened beforehand and whether you heard anything unusual. Do not add spray lubricant or household oil.

Repairing damage without losing the original finish

A movement repair may be all a clock needs. If the case or dial is damaged too, we consider it on its own merits. Original surfaces, old repairs and the materials used all affect what can be done and how far treatment should go.

Case and dial work can include cabinet repairs, silvering, gilding and hand engraving. We explain the options before work begins, including where retaining an aged finish is preferable to replacing it.

James has worked with clocks professionally since 2003 and holds a British Horological Institute diploma in clock servicing and restoration. Mechanical and restoration work is undertaken through the Stonehouse workshop.

What our customers say

James serviced and cleaned our French 8 day mantel clock, which hadn’t worked for many years. It’s been in our family for over 100 years, and he did an excellent job. It’s now back in its rightful place on the mantle. Stunning!

Super experience. I got a clock service and a pocket watch repair, both reasonably priced, and got some great advice at the same time. Highly recommend if you have any antique clocks or watches that need attention.

Hereford clock repair questions

Collection can be arranged, particularly for large or fragile clocks. We need your postcode, an idea of the clock’s size and any access information before discussing the charge and arrangements for returning it.

Bring it to 4 Bath Road, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. The shop is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays; opening times are on our Contact page. Call before a special journey to confirm availability and any handling advice.

Yes. Many clocks have no obvious maker’s mark. Photographs of the case and dial help us identify the type, and an inspection lets us assess the movement. Any information about its history is useful but not essential.

We can inspect it and explain what is feasible. Tell us about any earlier work you know of, even if it was some time ago. Alterations or damaged parts can affect the scope and cost of the repair.

Possibly, although it may need regulation or attention to its set-up rather than an overhaul. Tell us how much time it loses and whether the loss is consistent. We will assess the cause before recommending work.

Yes. The recommended work and quotation are discussed after assessment. A photograph can help with an initial enquiry, but it cannot show all the wear inside a movement, so we normally need to examine the clock before confirming a price.
