Putting right what has worn over time

Many clocks arrive still running, but with a weak strike, unreliable timekeeping or a pendulum that stops without warning. These changes can point to wear inside the movement. An adjustment may help in some cases; in others, the mechanism needs to come apart.

When an overhaul is required, we dismantle the movement and clean the components individually. Pivots, bearings, wheels and springs are checked, and the repairs agreed with you are completed before reassembly. Correct lubrication and a period of running and regulation finish the work.

Our shop is at 4 Bath Road, Stonehouse in Gloucestershire. It is not a Bath address. Smaller clocks can be brought to us, while collection offers an alternative for large clocks or customers who would prefer not to transport a fragile piece themselves.

Has something changed in how it runs?

  • It needs restarting several times a week
  • The ticking has become uneven
  • The strike or chime no longer works correctly
  • The winding key turns without winding the spring
  • A hand, pendulum or other component is damaged
  • The case or dial needs attention as well as the movement

A useful first step: note what the clock does before it stops. Does it run for minutes or days? Does the fault appear when it strikes? That information helps us assess the problem. Avoid forcing the key or adding household oil.

Detail of antique clock restoration work at Vintage Clocks

Keeping the parts that give a clock its character

A worn finish does not always need replacing. Before treating a case or dial, we consider what survives, what has been altered and what you want the finished clock to look like. Repairing a damaged area may be preferable to refinishing the whole piece.

Restoration can include cabinet work, silvering, gilding and hand engraving. Where the movement also needs servicing, both jobs can be assessed together, with the mechanical and cosmetic work explained separately.

James has worked professionally with clocks since 2003. His qualifications include a British Horological Institute diploma in clock servicing and restoration.

What our customers say

James serviced and cleaned our French 8 day mantel clock, which hadn’t worked for many years. It’s been in our family for over 100 years, and he did an excellent job. It’s now back in its rightful place on the mantle. Stunning!

Super experience. I got a clock service and a pocket watch repair, both reasonably priced, and got some great advice at the same time. Highly recommend if you have any antique clocks or watches that need attention.

Questions from Bath customers

No. The shop address is 4 Bath Road, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire. We serve Bath customers from that workshop, with collection by arrangement. Please check the address before travelling.

Send your postcode, photographs of the clock and an indication of its size. Tell us about stairs, restricted access or other practical issues. We can then discuss the collection charge, transport and return arrangements.

Yes. A mechanical service does not automatically include cosmetic restoration. If the case and dial are sound, they may need no work. Any treatment to them is discussed and agreed separately.

Yes. Striking and chiming faults are part of our mechanical repair work. Describe exactly what happens and whether the clock still keeps time. We inspect the movement to establish why the chime has failed.

Contact us first rather than dismantling it yourself. The case, dial, hands, pendulum and weights may help us assess and test the clock. For a longcase clock, we will explain what needs to be transported and how this is arranged.

We give an expected timescale after assessing the clock and the repairs needed. An overhaul includes time for running and regulation, and some jobs require parts to be sourced or made. Ask about the current workload when you enquire.
