Full Description:
An exceptional and highly unusual c.1870 French Mantel Clock designed beautifully in the architectural style of a grand carriage clock. This is a remarkably substantial, large-stature piece commanding real presence,

Case & Aesthetic:
The heavy, solid brass case boasts a striking architectural silhouette with crisp moldings, decorative fluting along the upper and lower cornices, and a sturdy, classical-style turned handle. Unlike typical carriage clocks with thin frames and five glass panels, this rare mantel variant sports wide, robust brass side flanks and a beautifully integrated round white enamel dial. The dial face features crisp black Roman numerals, sweeping spade hands, and dual winding arbors accessible directly from the front.

Movement & Mechanics:
Good 8 day French carriage clock movement signed ion case, dial and movement and platform by maker. James Grohé was a highly esteemed watch, clock, and pocket chronometer maker who established his business in London during the early 19th century. He operated out of 7 Wigmore Street, Cavendish Squarefrom approximately 1832 until his death in 1872. The firm continued trading under the Grohé name well into the late 19th century.
• The Anglo-French Connection: While Grohé was a prominent London retailer, many luxury carriage clocks bearing his name were actually custom-manufactured by top-tier workshops in Paris—such as Drocourt or Jacot—and then imported, finished, and retailed through his prestigious London shop.

• Design Features: This exquisite piece features a heavily engraved gorge case with an intricately patterned gilded mask surrounding the enamel dial. The top features an oval viewing window revealing the high-grade platform escapement

Condition & Provenance:
The brass retains a gorgeous, authentic antique patina with minor surface age-toning. The white enamel dial is in clean shape without severe cracks. The rear door opens smoothly, and the mechanics appear highly complete.
